'Station Poltergeist'
Story told and wittnessed by the webmaster and a sfaff member who wishes to stay anonymous.
The following is a truthful account of certain phenomena? That has been experienced in the Duty managers office on platform 2/3
at Westbury station.
Possibly as long ago as the early 1980’s the ‘white house’,a large building opposite the station entrance that was constructed
in the early 1950’s, initially as a hostel for visiting train crew but also used as a mess room, B.O. point and general office accommodation
under British Rail, had a reputation amongst older staff of being haunted and certain drivers and guards will not enter the building after dark.
Work at Westbury Network Rail commenced on the demolition of the whole ‘white house’ complex, leaving only
the rail staff club at the front ( a smaller, separate building ).
One day, back in December of 2006 staff members were sat at their desks , there were nobody else in the office or in the adjacent booking-on point,
the time was approx 1220pm. They were both quite and doing administrative tasks. Behind where they were sat was located a fridge with a microwave
on the top.
On the microwave was kept a large jar of coffee together with a couple of mugs, spoons and some odds and ends of
paperwork lower down the fridge.
Suddenly, without any warning or sign of what was about to happen, there was a large crash. The coffee jar, mugs, pages
and books were scattered on the floor. The objects had definitely not been placed carelessly or part-balanced on the microwave or fridge,
The fridge had not been opened for sometime and was not running/chilling at the instant everything fell. The building was
not subject to any ground vibration or passing train (there were none, everything was quite except for one class 150 unit
sat in platform 3). The way that the objects fell and hit the floor suggests that they, or at least the coffee jar, were pulled with
some degree of force. The only explanation they could come to
was something unseen or sensed had pushed the jar from its position on top of the microwave and the process of falling
had disturbed the other objects. Nothing was broken.
Other unusual happenings around the same area which have witnessed by other staff members are large bangs coming from the sink.
This has happened on more than one occasion and has been strong enough to lift the kettle and cutlery into the air.
Above the customer information window was a clear Perspex rack for keeping a few copies of train timetables in. This had
been there for sometime and was prevented from falling by 3 or 4 pins hammered into the frame along the bottom (still there).
About 4 week after the above incident it was noticed that the Perspex holder was missing
from its position, and found on the floor below the window.
A staff member asked what had happened, and was told that during the night the duty manager, had been doing work at the desk when the
holder had come crashing down onto the floor, breaking into several pieces. This had not happened before, the pins
prevented it moving or tipping as it was bottom-heavy and would not do so. The window had been closed and locked and
nobody else had been nearby..
One Friday evening, ‘April o7’ a staff member was in the office with a colleague and heard the kettle start to boil and then switch itself off.
He waited a moment and ask ’ did you want the hot water because the kettle just boiled’ and he replied ‘ I didn’t boil it,
I never use it.
Personal belief's by me and anonymous staff members is that a spirit from the ‘white house’, now that it as been demolished, has moved across to platform 2/3
on the station. It will be interesting to see what happens when the building alterations take place on the platform in the next
few months.
The latest event to happen in the office is of a possible orb caught on night vision. View this clip and others by joining the
