'THE WOODMEN IN MY HEDGEROW'

By Dr R.C.C.Clay

At 6.30 am, on 1st August I was leaning on the hunting gate and looking across my orchard to the hedgerow beyond. I became aware of many men stooping at work in the hedgerow and the field beyond it, called Orchard Hays. All the workers were facing south with their backs to the church. They occupied a length of about 100 yards of woodland. I looked to my left, where the much broader expanse of woodland runs up to meet the hedgerow, but it was empty of men. This latter portion of woodland is modern. The men were in the area, where in all probability a large wood existed in former centuries.
