Story by Anna of Devizes.. Ghostly experiences are usually all very personal. It’s a rare occurrence that two or more people will both see the same ghost or experience the same disturbances at the same time. I believe that any experiences from ‘beyond the grave’ can be greatly influenced by a host of different external things. We may be extremely tired, agitated or stressed by emotional trauma, and these personal things should be taken into account when trying to determine the truth behind an ‘experience’ I also believe that being in specific places can influence our imaginations. Old musty churches, the cellar of an 17th century cottage or walking through a dark wooded area where there is nothing but darkness and silence can set off even the most lame of imaginations. The truth is if we want to believe in something, then we will believe in that something – but that doesn’t necessarily make it true.
At the time of my ‘experience’ and within the few days surrounding it, I was convinced that something unusual, not of this earth, had happened to me. However as months passed on and the experience became just a dim memory, I had tended to dismiss my story’s validity more and more.
My experience happened back in early spring, when I was walking through Roundway Park in Devizes on a lovely Sunday afternoon. I must admit I had a few drinks the night before and my brain wasn’t firing on all cylinders so I will try and explain (to the best of my memory) what took place that afternoon. My friend and I were walking her dog around Drews Pond and eventually ended up at Roundway Park. For the locals, Roundway’s notoriety is known, not as the residential area that now resides there, but as Wiltshire’s now redundant Mental Asylum. People from all over Wiltshire were treated here from 1851 until the early 90′s. Aliments from being drunk and disorderly, young pregnancies and sometimes just the homeless were sent to Roundway in order to ‘cure’ them Some people made this place their home when then had no where else to go, and some people were even buried on the grounds of Roundway Hospital. The graves are still there but cannot be seen.
My experience happened when we were walking across a small grassy area just off the hospital. I felt someone walking behind me and glanced back to see who was there. There was no-one there so I carried on walking and chatting to my friend but always slightly aware that there was someone behind me. I kept looking but again saw no-one. I also heard what I would describe as a jangling sound, like keys or something metal being rattled. It didn’t bother me until we had passed this place through a wooden gate and then I asked my friend if she had heard anyone behind us. She just promptly blurted, “Probably the Roundway Ghosts!” Later when I told my boyfriend (he’s more local to Devizes than me) what I had experienced he asked where it had happened, and where I explained he had no hesitation in telling me that this was the area where patients had previously been buried. I had to check this out and bought a book on the history of the hospital, and to my knowledge this is correct. What ever was walking behind me on that day didn’t seem a threat and I didn’t feel afraid. I have wondered however during the last few months about the state of my head that day. Having ‘a few’ the night before can cloud judgements as we all know, but strangely I wasn’t thinking about ghosts of anything like that when my experience happened , it just came out of the blue and with no straight explanation for it. Maybe alcohol can make us more sensitive and aware of things – who knows. Just wish we could record things like this on tape…..

A few months ago, my boyfriend and I became interested in visiting "haunted" places in Wiltshire and we have recently visited West Kennet Long Barrow, Waylands Smithy & Devil's Den.

My boyfriend had a feeling that he needed to visit a certain place, but he couldnt work out where it was. He was having a recurring dream about moving & burying dead bodies in a woods, which was not only vivid, but very disturbing too.

A few weeks ago, I was looking at a website about haunted places in Wiltshire, and came across a report about Roundway Asylum & Drew's Pond Wood. Looking at the pictures of it on the website sent shivers down my spine, so I sent the link to my boyfriend. He immediately told me that this was the place he had been dreaming about, and that he believed he may have worked at the asylum in a past life, so we knew we had to pay it a visit.

We went to Roundway & Drew's Pond Wood on 3/7/2010. As soon as we saw the old asylum buildings, my boyfriend said everything looked familiar, even though he'd never actually been there before. As we headed into Drew's Pond Wood, he started to tell me about certain things we'd find in there, and scarily enough he was spot on.

We both felt very uneasy as we entered the woods from a track off Byron Road. The whole place had a very eerie & creepy atmosphere, made worse by the story we had read on the internet. I swear I saw someone on the path behind us, but when my boyfriend went to look, there was no one there.

About halfway round, we came across a sign on a fence about the wedding party accident at the pond and a cottage that was on the site. The sign mentioned about the Jeffries family, which spooked us both up as my boyfriend remembered the name of Robert Jeffries from his dream, and believes this was his work colleague at the asylum. (we have tried Googling the name, but cant find any details on this)

We soon found ourselves on the path leading to the old cemetary, which according to internet reports is where many dogs refuse to walk. As soon as we spotted the wall and archway entrance, my blood ran cold as this was one of the pictures from the internet that made me shiver.
I felt reluctant to pass under the archway, but my boyfriend wanted to investigate the burial grounds as it featured heavily in his dreams.
As soon as we entered the cemetary, I went very cold and clammy. I felt sick and developed a headache, and felt very uneasy being in there.
My boyfriend felt at ease though, because he felt he knew the place already.

We walked to the top of the wood and sat on a bench for a few minutes, but we both kept turning around as we had the feeling that we were being watched from behind. At this point, my boyfriend also said he had a headache. We decided to move off and went back into the woods, down some steps at the side of the burial ground.
As we were walking down the steps, I was drinking from a bottle and I heard and felt someone blow in my ear sharply. I know it wasnt my boyfriend, and he was walking in front of me, and there was no one else around.

We went back into the burial ground and found the few remaining headstones, but I still had that feeling of unease. We couldnt find what it was my boyfriend knew he had to look for, so we decided to make a hasty exit as we just felt spooked. The whole time that we were walking through the woods, we both felt that we were being watched and/or followed.

When we got back to our car and drove off, we both felt our headaches lift. We were discussing how we felt, my boyfriend wasnt sure what emotions he was feeling, but he knew that there were some unresolved issues. I felt very down and depressed after my visit to the woods, but this lifted as soon as we left Devizes.

We have been talking about the asylum and woods this morning, and we both feel that we need to go again, but after yesterday, I don't think I'm feeling brave enough yet!

Are you experiencing something strange in your home from the sound of footsteps, knockings or some other unexplained phenomenon.

Have you seen a ghost in your home.

Are you experiencing Smells or oders in the home, that can not be explained, for example pipe tobacco smells, perfume or aftershave.

Do you ever get a feeling that you are not alone in the home.

Have you seen objects moving around by unseen hands in your home or work place.

Many of these experiences are never reported because people don't want to feel weird and odd.
People are frightened to talk because of skepticism (it's all in your head, it's only your eye's playing tricks, you're hallucinating, its a misinterpretation of something natural or some other reply) and are talked out of what may of been a real paranormal experience.
So if you are witnessing events and need someone to talk too, please post your comment below or If you prefer that you and your experience to stay private from public eyes then thats not a problem.
